Holidays

I am hoping everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

We spent time with family and enjoyed conversation and laughter.

It is special to be able to spend quality time with those you love.

At the same time, my friend's brother lost his battle with health problems and another friend's mom passed away also.

This holiday has been full of ups and downs. Its these types of situations that make you appreciate what you have and to not take things for granted.

child had meltdown...

Ran out of milk yesterday (Christmas Eve).
Today We have been home.
Still out of milk.
Have been snoozing.
Woke up after 3 hours, only to be blindsided by "why aren't you buying milk?"
Aarrgghh. F* it! I grabbed my purse, no phone, to get milk.
Child had meltdown.
Can't put it into writing because it is just too unbelievable to explain!
Anyway, child had meltdown, I bought milk, everyone is leaving me alone, and I am having a beer!
Serious, is this what I have to deal with? Maybe I WILL go to work tomorrow!

Life's Lessons

Life's Lessons... that I have learned...

1. I am not a big fan of the holidays... ba humbug.

2. I am a morning person, either like it or leave me the hell alone.

3. Do not interrupt me during the last 10 minutes of my tv show.

4. Why is it that the only time anyone wants to talk to me is when I am either on the phone, trying to sleep, or watching the end of a good show?

5. No, no cats NEED to eat breakfast at 4:30 in the morning. You can wait until I get up at 5am... or eat the dry food...

6.Why is it that the garbage can sit outside the backdoor and 3 people walk past it, but no one can grab the little yellow handles and take it to the garage (which you also walk past)???

7. As long as I can pull my hair back into a clip, it does not have to be washed every day.

8. If I don't have to go anywhere, my pajamas are good enough to stay in, even if we do have company!

9. I love my son - I wouldn't trade him for the world... but I would consider loaning him out for a while...

10. Why do I have to repeat myself several times? It is selective hearing or do you truly need a hearing aide??

11. I don't decorate for the holiday. My son and his grandma do that. I am so not into them anymore!

12. Working retail has totally killed the holiday spirit for me! I can live without them...

13. I do love my family (with the exception of some days) and enjoy the time we spend together... and sometimes that is more than enough time!

14. When I get home at night, please let me get my shoes and coat off before hitting me with everything.

15. Can I please use the bathroom in peace? I really don't need to share that time with 3 cats and a child talking through the door.

16. Why is it that the bathroom can be empty for hours, UNTIL I decide to soak in a hot bubble bath?

17. Give me a pack of Oreos and a glass of milk... and leave me alone!

18. Cheese filled pretzel bites... I can make a full three-course meal of those.

19. Going outside in my pajamas is not unusual. If you don't like it - don't look!

20. I have no room in my king size bed for anyone but me... my eight pillows... 6 teddy bears... and 3 real-life cats with claws... so go sleep on the couch.

Holidays... too commercial

I worked in a mall for 4 years part time and then in a boutique for 2 years.

Holidays have become some commercialized! What's up with that?

What happened to holidays with family and being social?

Now it means Christmas sales and all that.

Holidays used to mean family and good food. Now it means shopping,  spending money, going out, and shopping. Everything is commercial. What happened to Christmas Eve church service, family dinner, family Christmas breakfast, opening gifts, and quality time?

Traveling and Planning

Okay, so I am going on a trip... a vacation... first one in... well, let's just say "many" years.

I am one who has to plan - I am far from spontaneous. Drop everything and go? Only if I can make sure I have it planned. Anyway, we have had tickets for months now and the flight is around the corner. I know what I need to pack and know what to bring, but getting it from my list and brain into the suitcase is a whole different story.

(Unfortunately this is a part of my many flaws... I can plan and plan... and then power it out the 25th hour... just like Christmas shopping or planning a party... know it's coming, have all the plans, wait until the last minute to finish everything!)

Okay, anyway, back to the vacation on the horizon. This is my son's first trip and he is so excited that he is driving me crazy. He is packing and unpacking, counting hours and minutes, making lists and checking them twice, along with asking a million questions.

I, on the other hand, am stressing... making sure we have everything, making sure we won't have trouble getting through security, making sure we have enough money, making sure he has everything, hoping he has a good time, making sure everything gets done at work before I walk away from my desk for a few days... I stress over these things.

I just want everything to be perfect. I know I can't control EVERYTHING, but I like I think and hope I can. I just want him to have a good time and remember this for the rest of his life.

My biggest stressor is worrying about everyone else and hoping they have a good time. I don't worry about me... it's the rest of the world I worry about.

I just hope we have a good time... and I don't give myself an ulcer over all this!

My Childhood Home...

It wasn’t really a “home” … it was a mobile home. It was large and I had an awesome bedroom – my closet was the length of my room and I had plenty of storage space. As a little girl, I needed all the space I could get…

May not be tons of memories, but there are truly a few memorable things…

I got my first tv in that home. My dad brought it home for me one day – a 13” black and white with an antennae on the back (Cable? What was cable?). My carpet was built in… green and gold shag… oh well, it was carpet. I even had my own record player… yes, the turntable in the plastic case, with a handle, that had the cord wrapped on the back.

One memory I had was my first pair of glasses… I came home from the eye doctor and went in to change my clothes. I took my glasses off and set them on the floor. OOPS! I changed my clothes and that was that. Mom walked in to put something away and stepped on my glasses. Well, needless to say, less than an hour later, we were on our way back to the eye doctor to have the frames straightened out, so they fit back on my face.

And then there was the pink silly putty on green shag carpet… did you know that silly putty comes off news paper and furniture, but carpet… that is a whole other story… nope… does not come out of carpet… and the pink is REALLY bright on the dark green carpet, in the middle of the living room floor.

Let’s see, since we were in a neighborhood of people the age of my grandparents, I had many “grandparents” looking out for me. They bought from my fundraisers and they even taught me how to ride my bike. Needless to say, the bike experience took (honestly) 12 times removing the training wheels before my dad threatened to never put them back on. (Did you know that if you tried to do a u-turn, going up a hill, with training wheels, you would tip over and crash to the asphalt? Yep, you will.) Guess there was no turning back that Friday afternoon! He took the wheels off and there was my pink bike, white banana seat, and multi-colored plastic fringes hanging from the handlebars. I even had a while basket on the front with small plastic flowers. Okay, so I got up Saturday morning, in a desire to ride my bike. I had a group of adults at the top of the road and another at the bottom. They took turns holding the back of my bike, running me up and down the street. I was getting tired, but they refused to let up. It even came down to food. No lunch break until I got the two-wheeler down pat. I don’t think I had lunch till dinner, but I learned to ride, thanks to their persistency…

I loved that home. It was where I grew up…

Before I was a mom...

I worked, I lived, and that was it. Nothing special, nothing important, nothing drop-dead fabulous. Just a working stiff since high school, still with no popularity, and truly no social life. I was just a face in the crowd. Now my son, fourteen years old, is the center of my world. He has pushed me and challenged me, forcing me to step outside my comfort zone and be a little spontaneous. I also know, that as a mom, I don't sleep well or even through the night. I wake to every sound... The thunder, the sleep-talking, the 5-lb snoring and wheezing cat. Yep, I am a mom, running on no sleep, and loving it anyway.

what a day

This morning, my son and I had a battle on the way to church. Talk about a screaming match... lucky it is only a 10 minute drive... what a way to start the day! Should have stayed in bed!

how do you know when you can't win

How do you know when it is time to throw in the towel? I am so sick of fighting what feels like a losing battle.

time (and space) to myself? nope!

Being a single mom leaves me exempt from my own time and space. I can be laying down and watching TV, when he comes in and just stands at the foot of my bed. "What do you want?" I ask. "Nothing" he answers and then just stands there. "Aarrgghh - just go away!" I want to scream, but I can't. Let us not forget that I can be sleeping (or napping) as my eyes are closed. He will wake me up to ask me if I'm okay... at least he doesn't ask if I'm sleeping. That would drive me even crazier! I love him to death, but there are times when I'm not sure who will win this battle - him or me...

I am beat...

I love my son, but there are days when I have my doubts. I have to be careful not to make statements than can be interpreted as "you promised" or "but you said we could" which always seem to get me in trouble. Always listen when a question is asked Andre be sure you know what you are answering. If you don't, you can get yourself in trouble. Trust me - speaking from experience.

Growing who I am

I am working to grow my work-from-home business... While working two jobs, raising my son, and going to school full time. I have all these plans on my mind but no idea where to start or time to do it. Any suggestions?

Mothers day is around the corner. Will I be remembered? No one remembered me on valentines day, why should mothers day be any different?

41 Year old Mom who just faced death

My day went well on Wednesday, I worked, I ate dinner, and I started my homework. Suddenly my eyes started itching and I started sneezing. My throat started to get tight.

I couldn't breathe and I had no idea what was happening. My mom took me to the ER and they plugged me with IV's and drugs, breathing treatments and steroids. Turns out to be an allergic reaction to my blood pressure medication I have been on for over two years.

They had a choice - either put me in a drug-induced coma to get tubes down my throat or take me under and insert a trac tube. I remember them rolling me into ICU Wednesday and didn't wake up until Saturday morning.

Talk about a scare - not knowing what happened, what caused it, if it will happen again, did they finds the right cause, when will be my time.

You never know when it will be your time, but God will know and will make sure he is there with you.

Has your child ever feared anyone in your family?

I am faced with a sticky situation. My child has gotten to be deathly afraid of one individual in our family. This person has become verbally-abusive towards him, along with occasional hits and slaps. He feels afraid and doesn't understand why this is happening to him. She tells me that he attacks her and tries to hurt her, which has never been noticed. She gets angry with me because I don't believe her.

I am so confused and concerned. I feel that there is something mentally going on, but I can't just walk up to her and tell her to have an evaluation done.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I feel like I am trapped.

Thank you.

Aging

How do you address family members who are showing mental signs of aging? Any suggestions on how to be "politically correct"?

My son's Christmas wish

My sons wish for Christmas is for me to be home with him more, instead of working so much. As a mom, I guess I need to get my priorities in order. I don't want to work so much but I feel I must, to pay the bills and so my son has stuff and doesn't have to go without. I am torn and depressed. Now I am even more confused about the holidays. I have gotten to be such a scrooge anyway but this year I am crabby and confused.
